File extension mim information

The file extension MIM is a file which identifies Multi-Purpose Internet Mail Message files that are associated with encoded files and emails that are 8-bit that can be used in storing related character sets that are non-US. E-mail parsers, servers and e-mail software handle the files in a different way even though this email file type can be opened. Multi-purpose Internet Mail Extension or MIME is a protocol for the transmission of information that is non-textual. A non-ASCII data is basically converted to ASCII for transmitting and it is then converted back to the receiving end.
Encoding for MIME which is now mimencode and was originally mmencode is one that is used mostly and is a replacement for uuencode as all mail systems are not translated by that encoding scheme. There are many MIME types that exist with others that are added as data types and new programs are being developed. MIME is a file format that is flexible and permits for the inclusion of virtually any document or file on an email message. MIME messages can specifically contain images, text, video, audio and any other application specific data.
